Rio nell'Elba

Here people still live with the ancient trust in their neighbors; in the evening, keys remain in the house locks, and quietness reigns supreme.

A beauty not for everyone, only for some

Here people still live with the ancient trust in their neighbors; in the evening, keys remain in the house locks, and quietness reigns supreme. Essential, minimal, autonomous, and independent. Often considered "out of the way," Rio nell'Elba takes pride and fame in this very title.

The soul of the village

The village lights up at dusk, and the dazzling white gives way to the warm, soft lights of the evening. You can hear the squeaking of clothesline ropes, and with the wind, the scent of laundry enters the houses. It suddenly becomes a small "nativity scene," made of illuminated alleys, damp steps, half-closed windows, silent voices, background splashes of water, and strolling cats. Its charm is not for everyone; it is for those who love silence, the essential, and distance from the chaos. A sort of refuge and meditation, it is liked by many but truly loved by few.

What to see and experience

Rocks, Mediterranean scrub, the scent of rosemary and wild fennel plants, walls covered with caper plants, and along the road leading to the sports field, laurel berries fall from the trees and shatter on the ground. Bougainvillea in every alley, steps, pebbles, shimmering stones, and small fountains. Supported by an immense expanse of prickly pears that in summer roll down as if they wanted to visit Nisporto.

Small, perched upon itself on a high hilltop, Rio nell'Elba is a little gem that offers an exceptional view over Rio Marina and the sea. Piazza del Popolo is the hub for meeting, chatting, and movement, the lung of the village that fills with chaos and colors on the day of the local market. Here, people's faces become "familiar faces" after just a few days; the hospitality, kindness, and harmony of this place ensure that you can have the feeling of being at home.

The Piazzetta della Pietà, which in the early 1950s gathered people who each brought their own chair to watch outdoor cinema together, is a fundamental point of the village. It encapsulates the beauty and historicity of the place. Around the square, you can smell memories; among the alleys, there are houses with doors that have remained closed for a long time, breathing a nostalgia that takes you back in time. The square itself, with the Church of the Pietà, is one of those places that has managed to maintain its extraordinary original beauty.

The houses and alleys

The narrow and long alleys are almost entirely uphill and full of steep stairways that the local elderly climb several times a day without any effort, unlike the tourists who struggle after the first few steps. The private homes are all architectural gems even from the outside. In many of them, you can notice very steep stairs to reach the entrance door. Flowers and plants are the pride of the village and are never lacking in any season. The interiors of the houses have been faithfully left in their ancient style and not modernized: wooden beams, thick walls, fireplaces, cellars, attics, and tiny doors are delightful to see and to live in.

Before leaving

A small village that manages to enchant. A small jewel set on the slopes of Monte Capannello at 155 meters above sea level, with very few bars, pizzerias, 1 bakery, 2 grocery stores, and a few ice cream parlors in the historic center that can be counted on one hand. The local people are "magnetic" in the true sense of the word; you can remember their faces after just a few hours of staying there. The powerful and central church dominates the entire village and is the pivot around which the daily routine of the inhabitants revolves, to the sound of the bell tower chimes that often echo among the old and ancient walls of the houses.
