Pisa, once at the mouth of the Arno

Pisa is a human-scale city, ideal for a visit of one or two days.

Pisa is a historic Tuscan city (one of the most fascinating), overlooking the Arno river, known worldwide for its Leaning Tower, but rich in art, culture, and traditions that go far beyond its most famous monument. An ancient Maritime Republic, Pisa played a central role in the medieval Mediterranean, leaving an architectural and cultural legacy of great value.

Piazza dei Miracoli

The monumental heart of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Piazza dei Miracoli hosts four masterpieces of Pisan Romanesque art:

  • The Leaning Tower, the bell tower of the Cathedral, famous for its tilt;
  • The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, an extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture;
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni, the largest in Italy;
  • The Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale), an ancient cemetery with medieval frescoes.

The historic center

The center of Pisa is crossed by medieval streets, elegant squares, and historic palaces. Along the Lungarni, you can admire Renaissance buildings, churches, and suggestive views, especially at sunset. Of particular interest are Piazza dei Cavalieri, home to the Scuola Normale Superiore, and Borgo Stretto, the commercial and social heart of the city.

Art, culture, and science

Pisa is a university city of ancient tradition. Galileo Galilei was born here, a symbol of the link between the city and scientific research. Museums, libraries, and academic institutions make Pisa a lively and international cultural center.

Traditions and city life

Among the most deeply felt traditions are the Gioco del Ponte, the Luminara di San Ranieri, and the Palio di San Ranieri, events that involve the entire city. Pisan cuisine reflects Tuscan tradition, with simple and tasty dishes based on local products.

The name "Pisa" most likely has Etruscan origins and means "mouth," recalling the city and its waterways. And the Tuscan city was once located at the mouth of the Arno river, before the debris carried by the river itself formed a plain that, in addition to burying the port, definitively distanced it from the sea, from which it is now just over ten kilometers away.
