Piacenza is a little-known city, but it is a little gem. Founded in 218 BC by the Romans, it has a splendid square, Piazza Cavalli, with historical monuments: the Palazzo Gotico, the Baroque equestrian statues of the Farnese family, the medieval Chiesa di San Francesco, and the Duomo, Romanesque, with the dome frescoed by the famous Guercino. At Palazzo Farnese you can visit the museums (archaeological, art gallery with Botticelli's tondo, weapons room, and Europe's third-largest carriage museum). Don't miss the beautiful Chiesa di Santa Maria di Campagna with frescoes by Pordenone.
