Mola di Bari: authentic Puglia between the sea and village life

The port at sunset, the alleys of the old town, the square in the evening. Ten things to do in Mola di Bari and ten places to eat well.

Mola di Bari

If you wish to discover the most authentic soul of maritime Puglia, Mola di Bari is a gem not to be missed. Just a few minutes by train from Bari and very close to the most famous destinations on the Adriatic coast, this town preserves the straightforward charm of a living village, where the rhythms of the day are still marked by the sea, the return of fishing boats to the port, and evening life in the square.

Mola offers travelers a genuine and relaxing experience, far from the most crowded routes. Here, beauty lies in simplicity: from the smell of salt along the coast to the history of its ancient center, to the warm welcome of a community tied to its roots. It is the perfect stop or base for those who want to experience the truest and most intimate Puglia, made of sincere relationships, good food, and human-scale rhythms.

  2. Getting lost in the alleys of the historic center: walk without haste in the old town. It is very easy to come across traditional chairs set up on the corners of the sidewalks with crates of fresh fruit and vegetables from the Molese countryside.
  3. Visit Palazzo Pesce: an elegant historic residence with wonderful frescoes and ceilings, today a living cultural center that hosts intimate concerts and art exhibitions daily.
  4. Stroll along the port: go towards the late afternoon to observe the fishermen at work and breathe in the true maritime tradition of the town.
  5. Admire the Chiesa Matrice "San Nicola": in the heart of the historic center, this Renaissance church is a jewel of stone and history to be discovered calmly.
  6. Explore the Castello Angioino: the imposing fourteenth-century fortress guarding the sea. Take a walk around its walls to enjoy a beautiful perspective of the coast.
  7. Find Palazzo Roberti: look closely at the facade of this historic eighteenth-century palace, an important testimony to the town's past.
  8. The Teatro Van Westerhout: a small and delightful Italian-style theater named after the Molese composer Niccolò van Westerhout, the pride of the local community.
  9. Find the statua di Donna Flora: make a stop at the statue dedicated to Donna Flora, a symbolic and iconic figure to whom the citizens are strongly attached.
  10. Aperitivo and relaxation in Piazza XX Settembre: sit at a table in the majestic main square, watch the families strolling, and enjoy the lively evening atmosphere.

Where to stay

I definitely recommend the Historic Center (Old Town). Staying among these characteristic alleys allows you to fully immerse yourself in the daily life of the town.

In any case, Mola di Bari is a very livable and compact town: whichever area you choose will allow you to reach the sea, the central square, and the train station on foot in just a few minutes.

Good to know before you go

mola di bari

How to get there: very convenient! It is located just 20 minutes by regional train from Bari Centrale (with very frequent runs). Alternatively, there are suburban buses, but the train remains the fastest option.

How to get around: on foot or by bicycle. Everything is close and safe.

Best time to visit: from April to October. It is at its best on beautiful days, with outdoor events and the pleasant sea breeze.

How long to stay: I recommend staying even for a week. Mola is a strategic and quiet base for exploring Puglia: thanks to the excellent train connections, you can easily visit Bari, Polignano, Monopoli, and the Itria Valley during the day, and then return in the evening to the relaxing village atmosphere.

Advice for a respectful trip: Mola is a living and welcoming community. Enjoy the slow rhythms of local life, exchange a few words with the shopkeepers, taste the zero-km products, and let yourself be carried away by the kindness and spontaneity of the inhabitants.
